The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg, SC (www.uucs.org) seeks a Director of Religious Education to lead a thriving ministry for our children and their families, and to serve on a collaborative team of staff and volunteers designing learning and spiritual development for all generations in the congregation. This is a part-time position (15-22 hours/week), compensated in alignment with Unitarian Universalist Association fair compensation guidelines.

Description: The Director of Religious Education (DRE) leads religious education at UUCS for children and their families, working primarily with the Children’s RE Committee to develop all aspects of faith development programming for children and their families. They work as part of a team with the Minister(s), staff, and Children’s RE, Youth, and Adult Enrichment Committees to develop lifespan learning for spiritual development throughout the congregation.

Qualifications:

  • An understanding of Unitarian Universalist values, principles and practices
  • Respect for and a desire to work with children and their families and the congregation as a whole
  • Able to work independently, use existing resources and create new ones
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire, communicate with and interact diplomatically with people of diverse backgrounds, ages and interests
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including budget development and management
  • Ability to work as part of a team with the Children’s RE Committee, other committees in the Learning Ministry of UUCS (Youth Committee and Adult Enrichment Committee) and with the congregation as a whole, and with UUCS staff
  • Experience in coordinating programs for children and their families
  • Experience in recruiting, training and supporting volunteers, preferred
  • Completion of Renaissance Training Modules a plus or willingness to participate in additional training
  • Expertise in curriculum and spiritual development practices
  • Bachelor’s degree, desirable

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate RE programming for children and their families
  • Recruit, train, support and recognize teachers, facilitators, and assistants
  • Support and work collaboratively with the Children’s RE Committee, including selection of curricula; attend Children’s RE Committee meetings
  • Supports families through workshops, resources, and social gatherings
  • Work as part of a team with Minister(s), staff, and Children’s RE, Youth, and Adult Enrichment Committees to develop lifespan learning for spiritual development throughout the congregation
  • Share expertise in curriculum and spiritual development to create a coordinated program of lifespan learning across all generations of the congregation
  • Hire, train, schedule and supervise Childcare Workers, in coordination with Minister(s)
  • Work with Minister(s) to produce intergenerational services and intergenerational service times, including Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve
  • Develop and monitor program budget, working with Minister(s) and Children’s RE Committee
  • Responsible for purchasing and maintaining RE supplies
  • Monitor compliance with and update as needed Child/Youth Protection safety policies and procedures
  • Prepare annual RE prospectus and annual year-end report
  • Communicate RE information, events and schedules to various UUCS communications in both electronic and paper formats, including prospectus and annual report
  • Participate in the UU Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA); attend workshops
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
