The Return Home

Modified on: July 29, 2019

We have traveled far, some of us journeying out across new geographies, encountering new people; others of us roaming widely through our intellects, through books and films and ideas; all of us exploring the possibilities of our lives, the length and breadth and depth of who we are and who we can be. We have seen much; we have dared much. And then we return home.

We shall not cease from exploration
and the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first time.

(T.S. Eliot)

What a blessing for those who risk the journey out, in whatever ways we each journey,
that when we return to where we started, we have so changed through our journeying

that the place to which we have returned is new,
and we now more experienced, now renewed ourselves

can begin again.

Let us offer that blessing to one another
every time we return home.

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of this place, the home we share, to you.

(from a Gaelic blessing)
