From Your President
I hope everyone has enjoyed the December holidays and that you are thinking of making a few New Year’s Resolutions that you try to keep.
January will be a very busy month at UUCS. We will have a New Beginnings Potluck on Saturday, January 6. I hope you can attend this event, which is hosted by our Hospitality Committee.
December was an extremely busy month for us at UUCS, starting off with our 24th Annual UU Auction. Special thanks once again to Palma and Mitch Eisner for another successful fundraiser—we raised over $17,000. The Auction Committee members consisted of Linda Leible, Jan Jerome, Deb Williams, Michael Rainey, Karyl Fuller, Julie Harling, Lisa Harling, Diane Dixon, Karen Byars, Karen Mitchell, Joyce Harrison, Alice Sutton, Riley Lanier, and Dan McBride. The few fundraisers that we hold each year are critical to meeting our annual budgetary goals. Again to our Auction Committee, our Auction donors, and our generous Auction bidders—thank you so much.
While the Auction was being set up downstairs in Wilde Hall, our Sanctuary was being beautifully decorated by Roy Haynes, David Hudnall, and Ruth Stanton to get us in the holiday mood. Great job! All month long we were blessed with great music from our numerous musical members and our Choir reached an all-time high of nineteen members! We have loads of musical talent for a small congregation We cannot forget our outside clean-up led by our Building and Grounds Committee. Dead trees and limbs were removed from our property and after that, a December leaf-raking party followed. Thanks to our leaf-raking crew of Karen Mitchell, Rick Christian, John Tarrant, Pate Randall, Jule Klotter, and Judy Allen. Thank you.
On Sunday, January 14, we will have a congregational meeting to call Scott Neely as our settled minister. Last summer your UUCS Board hired Scott on a one-year contract which would have ended on June 30, 2018. If Scott is approved by our congregation as your settled minister, a new contract will be signed with him with no end date to his length of service. It will give both parties permanency so that we can grow our liberal religious message in Spartanburg County and beyond. Please vote yes that you want Scott as your full-time minister on or before January 14.
Our Annual Fund Campaign is gearing up to kick off in February. Linda Leible has agreed to chair this committee and your Board certainly appreciates her willingness to do this. Your Finance Committee and Board will be working on putting forward a 2018-19 pledge goal for this campaign. The UUCS fiscal year for next year begins on July 1, 2018, and ends June 30, 2019.
Wishing everyone a wonderful New Year.
Peace and Love
